Each year United Way of Portage County hosts its largest, organized volunteer event, Day of Caring!
This year’s event was held on Friday, June 23, 2023 in collaboration with United Way Worldwide. Day of Caring brought together 90 corporate and community volunteers who lent their support to complete 14 needed projects for non-profit agencies that serve Portage County.
Some of the projects included a home build for Habitat for Humanity of Portage County, landscaping at The Center of Hope, painting at Kent Social Services and King Kennedy Community Center, cleaning and assembling welcome baskets at Safer Futures, laundry and cleaning at The Haven of Portage homeless shelter, spring cleaning at Coleman Adult Day Services, and working with youth at Skeels Community Center. The agencies served by these projects are extremely grateful for the help, as they may not have the staff or funds available to complete these efforts on their own. It also provides the community with the opportunity to see amazing programs at work serving residents of Portage County.
Breakfast was hosted at the Center of Hope in Ravenna to kick off the day’s events. Willoughby Supply and Hometown Bank are the major sponsors of the event, along with Portage Community Bank and AMETEK. Volunteers also received lunch from Honey Baked Ham in Streetsboro.
“We are grateful for the volunteers who take a day out of their busy schedules to make a difference in our community and for our neighbors,” said Maureen Gebhardt, United Way of Portage County Director of Community Impact and Volunteers. “We are happy to be able to connect our volunteers to meaningful projects, not just for Day of Caring, but throughout the year.”
